Intellectual Mystery
Metatextual Techniques: How to Talk About Writing Within the Text
A text that knows it's a text. That's not a gimmick. That's a way of talking about reality through the rules of storytelling — and it changes how the reader experiences every page.
What Metatext Really Is
Metatext is writing that speaks about itself — about the process of its creation, about the language it's written in. It deliberately shows its seams. But in admitting its artificiality, it finds a different kind of strength. When I began working on «ADENIUM: ROOTS OF THE BLACK FLOWER» («АДЕНИУМ: КОРНИ ЧЁРНОГО ЦВЕТКА»), I faced a problem: how to tell a story about a system that controls reality without turning into a dry pedant. The answer came through metatext. The structure of the Mirror Codex itself became a metaphor for literary conventions — the rules of genre that the characters try to rewrite.
What It Does in Mystical Fiction
Intellectual mysticism offers unique possibilities for metatext. The genre is already concerned with mystery, with the unknowable, with the boundaries of reality. Metatext lets you explore those boundaries at the level of form. In «ICONOSTASIS OF SILENCE» («ИКОНОСТАС МОЛЧАНИЯ»), I used metatext to examine the silence of God. The texts written on the bodies of the saints are a literal embodiment of the idea that revelation must be earned. The protagonist's work of deciphering them becomes a metaphor for the reader's labour of understanding.
The Mistakes That Ruin It
Narcissism — the text talks only about its own brilliance. Overload — too many levels, the reader gets lost. Loss of emotion — the text becomes dry analysis. Artificiality — the device is visible as a device. In an early draft of «ADENIUM: THE MIRROR CODEX» («АДЕНИУМ: ЗЕРКАЛЬНЫЙ КОДЕКС»), the text became so overloaded with metatextual references that it lost its emotional force. I had to cut, keeping only those elements that served the main theme — a mother's sacrificial love.
What I've Learned
Metatext must serve the story, not the other way around. In the end, it's a conversation about how we create meaning, how we tell stories, how we try to understand reality through fiction. And in that conversation lies the hope that literature won't just entertain us — it will help us become more conscious authors of our own life narratives.

Have you ever read a novel that openly admitted it was a novel — and found that made it more real, not less?
