How to Fall in Love with Reading: 5 Difficult Novels That Change Everything
Some books are easy. You finish them in a weekend and forget them by Monday. Others demand something from you — and those are the ones that stay.
Why We Fear Difficult Books
Every time I pick up a thick novel with a reputation for being difficult, I feel the same mix of curiosity and fear. Fear of the unknown, of the effort required, of not understanding. This paradox has always interested me: we want depth, but we fear it. Difficult books aren't an obstacle. They're an opportunity. They teach us not just to consume a text but to enter into dialogue with it, to become co-authors of meaning.
What Makes Them Worth It
Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" wraps a philosophical challenge inside a gripping detective plot. Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" frightens readers with its system of identical names — but that complexity is where the magic hides. Dostoevsky's «Братья Карамазовы» is a philosophical dispute you don't just read but participate in. Joyce's "Ulysses" shows that consciousness isn't linear narrative but a complex, polyphonic flow.
How to Approach Them
Don't try to conquer "Ulysses" right away. Start with more accessible complex texts — Eco or Marquez. Read with a pencil. Study the context. And most importantly: allow yourself not to understand everything at once. Difficult texts can't be fully grasped on a first reading. Let it be a process, not a performance.
What I've Learned
When I was working on «ICONOSTASIS OF SILENCE» («ИКОНОСТАС МОЛЧАНИЯ»), I thought a lot about how Tolstoy combines epic scale with psychological precision. His ability to show history through individual fates is a lesson for any writer. Love of reading doesn't come through easy victories. It comes through overcoming difficulty. Difficult books are a training ground for the mind and soul — and they can give you that very magic of immersion we pick up a book for in the first place.
